REVIEW- Virals by Kathy Reichs

Here is my completely spoiler-free review of Virals by Kathy Reichs! My grandmother purchased this book, and all opinions are 100% my own! Enjoy!

Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.
As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends. They're a pack. They are Virals.

"Virals" was an interesting book to say the least. It's plot contained a murder mystery, scientific mutations, and even a hint of high school romance. At times, it was a little confusing with all the information, but eventually you get a better grasp of the story.

The main character, Tory, was very full of herself, so that got old really fast. She is one of those characters who thinks that they're the smartest person in the world, but she ended up never doing anything particularly special. The other characters were pretty unique. I did think that a lot of the stuff that the characters did was not accurate to what real kids their age would do. In the first chapter or two of the story, Tory cleans up a seashell using power tools sent to her by her aunt, which seemed a little extreme for a fourteen year old! None of the other characters were particularly special, but they all seemed to be pretty well developed.
The story was set off the coast of the Charleston Harbor. I, personally, have been to Charleston for YALLFEST, so it was cool to read about! Unfortunately, the islands that the group visited were a little bit fuzzy to me. I don't think that it was necessarily the writing, but I didn't understand how the kids got to all these other places so fast.
Overall, I gave "Virals" a 3 out of 5 stars. The beginning of the story was very slow for me, and I couldn't figure out what was supposed to be the main plot point. The rest of the book was less confusing and more fast paced, but it still wasn't a spectacular books. It didn't "wow" me! I would recommend this book to anybody who watches the TV series "Bones" because Tory is supposed to be the niece of the main character. I think I might have been able to appreciate the story more if I had the background knowledge from the show!
