REVIEW- I Was Here By Gayle Forman

This is a completely non-spoiler review, so read on and enjoy!

Cody and Meg were inseparable.
Two peas in a pod.
Until . . . they weren’t anymore.

When her best friend Meg drinks a bottle of industrial-strength cleaner alone in a motel room, Cody is understandably shocked and devastated. She and Meg shared everything—so how was there no warning? But when Cody travels to Meg’s college town to pack up the belongings left behind, she discovers that there’s a lot that Meg never told her. About her old roommates, the sort of people Cody never would have met in her dead-end small town in Washington. About Ben McAllister, the boy with a guitar and a sneer, who broke Meg’s heart. And about an encrypted computer file that Cody can’t open—until she does, and suddenly everything Cody thought she knew about her best friend’s death gets thrown into question.
I Was Here is Gayle Forman at her finest, a taut, emotional, and ultimately redemptive story about redefining the meaning of family and finding a way to move forward even in the face of unspeakable loss.

I Was Here was such a beautiful and important story. Not only was there an element of mystery, but it captured the way that a suicide will affect people whether you were close with them or not. Gayle Forman captured the selfish and superficial ways that people mourn like holding an excessive amount of memorial services for people that did not even know the person and the practiced "I'm sorry for your losses", but she also captured the sadness of a boy who lost his older sister and the thoughts of her best friend.
This definitely is not a funny book, but the humor in this story is well-timed and made me laugh out loud. There were some really interesting characters(Stoner Richard or Tree) that added a lot of different elements to an already complex story. Family was an important topic in I Was Here, but the main character's situation was less than ideal, so if you're in the mood for a story with a lot of touching family moments, this is not the book for you. Another really great part about this book were some of the quotes that were referenced. I found myself completely entranced during the scenes with a certain philosophical character.
The last thing that I wanted to mention in this review is the seriousness of this book. Please pay attention to what you're reading. Depression and suicide are very important and legitimate things that so many people suffer with. If you, for any reason, do not like this book, please to not bash that aspect because it could be really offensive and hurtful to someone else.

Love yourself and spread that love to other people.
